Our huge thanks to Virgin Atlantic pilot Chris Hall, who led a team of fellow Virgin adventurers to climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal, located in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains.
The challenge was particularly close to the hearts of four staff members from Virgin Limited Edition whose efforts to reach the 4,167 metre summit helped to raise money for local community projects supported by Kasbah Tamadot and the Eve Branson Foundation.
Hiking their way through colourful Berber villages, the team experienced life in these remote communities… not to mention a refreshing cup of Berber Mint Tea every hour or two!
With a 4am wakeup call, the start of summit day began in darkness with crampons tied to walking boots and ice axes in hand. Temperatures at the summit were sub-zero but there was still time to pose for a team photo, capturing this once in a lifetime opportunity.
After a somewhat easier descent, the team witnessed local boys in our woodwork centre, fashioning beautiful objects from locally sourced wood and had the chance to purchase handmade gifts and clothing made in our weaving centre, with all of the profits going to develop our sustainable community projects.
At the heart of this challenge was a huge fundraising effort, and we are grateful to everybody who kindly donated their money to the cause and to the committed climbers who have so far raised over £25,000. What a way to start 2017!
